Presentation Description:

The presentation will provide an overview of code provisions applicable to structural engineers for repair of existing buildings. The presentation will focus primarily on provisions of the International Existing Building Code, a model building code that has been widely adopted as a state or municipal building code in the past several decades, including a brief history of its evolution as a code. The organization of the code will be reviewed to provide insight into the items that must be considered by design professionals for compliance. Special attention will be given to the determination of whether “substantial structural damage” has occurred and the resulting triggers for additional evaluation and potential upgrades. Project examples will be presented to demonstrate methods of compliance, including quirks that may arise from local revisions to state or municipal building codes.

About the Presenter:

Steve Grelle is a structural engineer with over 15 years of engineering and construction experience in various structural repair, rehabilitation, and forensic projects. His investigative work has included structural damage and collapse assessments, condition assessments, and construction and material defect investigations. He has also observed and tested structures during original construction and repair work. While Steve’s work has included many modern and historical structural systems, a large quantity of his projects have included investigation, analysis, and repair of concrete structures. Steve is a member of the SEAoT Dallas Chapter, and is a former President and current Board Member of the North Texas Chapter of the International Concrete Repair Institute.
