Abstract:

This presentation will provide an overview of the AISC standard on prequalified moment connections for seismic applications (AISC 358-16). Items discussed in the presentation include: the history and purpose of the prequalified connections standard, requirements for a connection to become prequalified, and a brief description of each of the currently prequalified connections. The presentation will also provide a look at new connections currently undergoing prequalification.

Speaker Bio:

Dr. Michael Engelhardt is a Professor at the University of Texas at Austin, where he has been on the faculty since 1989. His primary emphasis in research is on the performance and design of seismic-resistant steel structures, structural-fire engineering, and steel and composite bridges. Dr. Engelhardt serves as a member of the American Institute of Steel Construction (AISC) Committee on Specifications, AISC Task Committee 8 on Fire Design, and serves as the Chair of the AISC Connection Prequalification Review Panel.
