Richard Capshaw is a frequent speaker on insurance and construction law. He was a contributing author to the book "Architect and Engineer Liability; Claims Against Design Professionals" and the author of the State Bar of Texas Construction Law Section Newsletter entitled "Statute of Repose, Dead or Alive?" Richard was also a contributing author to the book "Architect and Engineer Liability; Claims Against Design Professionals," Second Edition. He has been a featured speaker and conducted mock trials in the areas of insurance and construction law.   

PERSONAL

Richard Capshaw was born in Columbus, Georgia on August 12, 1958; admitted to the bar, 1981, Texas, the Supreme Court of the United States, United States Court of Appeals, Fifth Circuit, United States District Court, Northern, Southern, Eastern and Western Districts of Texas. Preparatory education: Oklahoma State University, Psychology Major (B.S. 1978). Legal education: University of Oklahoma (J.D. 1981). Phi Delta Phi; Editor, Oklahoma Law Review, 1979-1981. Board Certified - Civil Trial Law, Texas Board of Legal Specialization.

LEGAL PRACTICE

Richard began his legal career in 1981 with the Dallas law firm of Seay, Gwinn, Crawford, Mebus & Blakeney. In 1982, he became associated with Haynes & Boone, L.L.P., where he became a partner in 1989. In February 1993, he joined the Dallas office of Scott, Douglass & Luton, L.L.P. In March 1994, Richard formed the law firm of Capshaw, Goss & Bowers, L.L.P. In March 2007, he formed Capshaw & Associates. He has been actively involved in general commercial litigation with a focus on construction law and has represented design professionals and owners in construction disputes. Richard has also represented Plaintiffs in product liability actions.

Throughout his career, Richard has concentrated on construction litigation representing design professionals, owners, in the avoidance, prosecution and defense of construction claims. Richard also has extensive experience in the mediation process and acts as a mediator in facilitating the resolution of disputes. Richard has also served as a arbitrator in commercial disputes both within and beyond the construction industry.

MEMBERSHIPS   

Richard is Board Certified in Civil Trial Law, by the Texas Board of Legal Specialization, is a member of the State Bar of Texas Construction Section and a member of Construction Law Section of the Dallas Bar Association. He is AV rated by Martindale-Hubbell and has been recognized as a Super Lawyer in construction law by the Texas Lawyer. Richard is a member of ABOTA (American Board of Trial Advocates) which is an organization that supports the 7th Amendment to the United States Constitution and which requires extensive actual jury trial experience for membership. Richard currently serves as an officer, treasurer, for the Dallas Chapter of ABOTA and is a member of the Executive Committee.
